Crowdsourcing campaign: MashaLAB, a disOriented multimedia platform

Our Story

It was in Beirut that the idea for Mashallah News was born. In spring 2010, free-lance journalists Jenny Gustafsson and Isabelle Mayault started discussing an idea for creating a collective online platform covering life in the Arab world, Turkey and Iran. 

Frustrated by mainstream media’s biased coverage, they saw a need for reporting on interesting transformations taking place in cities across the region. In April, they contacted Istanbul-based journalist Clément Girardot, Beirut-based activist Micheline Tobia and Geneva-based graphic designer Ismael Abdallah. 

Mashallah News was launched in November 2010. The quest to share disOriented stories began.

The Impact

Next year, Mashallah News has the ambition to launch a multimedia platform, which will be dedicated to web documentaries, longer articles, photographic essays and sound reports. In these exciting times of social revolutions and technical developments, we want to provide opportunities for creators and viewers to write and share in an interactive way. 

This new lab for journalistic experiments will use a full array of resources and will combine different forms of storytelling: from live reporting on Twitter to interactive maps and simultaneous investigations in different cities.

Our team of journalists, photographers and multimedia reporters will work in collaboration with specialists from fields such as urban planning, sociology, art and human rights, enabling MashaLAB to become a strong base for quality journalism and innovative storytelling in the region.

What We Need & What You Get

In order to make the MashaLAB project sustainable, we need funds to: hire a technical team to build the new multimedia platform; afford an office space; and encourage talented collaborators to join us and work full-time in our team. Any donation will be crucial to enable us to realize this innovative project.

To this day, all Mashallah News contributors have been working on a voluntary basis simply because they believe in the idea sustaining the project. Thanks to them, and to occasional private donations (fundraising parties and local networks), we have been able to remain online for a year now, and to increase the number of cities we cover, as well as our team of contributors.

We want to evoke new ways of thinking, share original and less-told stories, spread the work of artists and creators from the region, make a mark in society, create cross-border networks, contribute to the changing world of reporting, be an independent and critical voice, give space to innovative and creative citizen initiatives.

Vernissage du magazine #1 Mashallah-news

Le studio AMI et le site internet Mashallah News organisent le vernissage du premier magazine-poster issu de leur collaboration. Objet innovant et graphique, le magazine reprend les meilleurs articles publiés sur le site durant ses six premiers mois d'existence. En filigrane, les révolutions politiques, sociales et culturelles qui ont secoué le monde arabe depuis le mois de janvier.

Nous vous donnons rendez-vous au bar Le Gavroche de 18h à 1h le jeudi 25 août prochain pour découvrir le magazine. Des projections vidéos et un mix de Mr Cheeky (oriental psyché funk beat groove) viendront agrémenter cette soirée. Pour soutenir Mashallah News, qui est pour l'instant une initiative bénévole, il vous sera possible d'acheter lors de l'évènement des sacs en toile estampillés Mashallah qui vous accompagneront partout : au marché, à la plage, à l'Uni ou au bureau.

AMI est un studio de communication visuelle basé à Carouge. Fondé à l'été 2010, il rassemble trois diplômés de la HEAD Genève : Adeline Senn, Martin Maeder et Ismaël Abdallah. Ils travaillent pour des institutions et des évènements culturels et ont notamment supervisé la communication de l'exposition Vue sur la mer en juin dernier. AMI collabore avec Mashallah News depuis ses débuts.

Mashallah News est un site d'informations désOrientées basé à Beyrouth et qui couvre les principales métropoles du monde arabe, de Turquie et d'Iran depuis novembre 2010. A rebours de l'actualité chaude, Mashallah News s'intéresse aux questions urbaines, sociales et culturelles. Proche du terrain, il rassemble des reportages originaux, des interviews, des vidéos et des travaux photographiques effectués par un collectif multinational de correspondants. Trilingue, français, anglais et arabe, le site propose un journalisme de qualité, impertinent et indépendant.

The big apple

Il s'en passe des choses intéressantes à New York, reportage sur le terrain avec l'émission communautaire turque (The Turkish Hour). 6 dollars le kebab mais la chanson est gratuite affirme la légende originale de la vidéo. 

 

Encore ? Petite incursion dans le meilleur, "autoproclamé", restaurant Kebab de New York. 

Allah, Street Fighter et les animaux

Sur la chaîne de télévision de Adnan Oktar (recommandation: lire sa bio, ça vaut son pesant de cacahuètes), un théologien a réussi à prouver que certains animaux disent le mot "Allah" en prenant comme example Blanca (animal??) de Street Fighter, enteresan ! 

 

Mashallah News Day @ Arkaoda, Kadiköy - saturday 25 june

On 25 june, Arkaoda (Kadiköy, Istanbul) will host a special event: the Mashallah News Day. You can find attached the program. Among the activities, there will be a conference on the topic "Journalism and the megalopolis", the screening of the movie “Tehran Has No More Pomegranates” in the presence of Iranian director Massoud Bakhshi. In the evening a fundraising concert will be held with Sami Baha, Fuji Kureta and Grup Ses. (entrance 10 TL, starting at 9).
